Critical realism, championed by its proponents as the most promising post-positivist social science paradigm, has gained significant influence in the last few decades. This paper provides a critical evaluation of the critical realism movement in the hope of facilitating more fruitful dialogues between its proponents and rivalling schools of sociologists. Two concerns are raised about contemporary critical realism. First, critical realism is not the only philosophical school against positivism and not necessarily the best. Weber's 'science as a vocation' has often been viewed as a therapeutic concept with no functional significance in the fully bureaucratized and professionalized modern science. However, development in the philosophy of science in the last century, especially the Kuhn thesis of the discontinuity of scientific progress and the Duhem-Quine thesis of underdetermination, shows that Weber's distinction between science as a vocation and science as a profession (career) can potentially answer one of the oldest questions in science studies: What makes scientific (...) breakthroughs possible? Meritocracy claims to reward the meritorious with more resources, thereby achieving social efficiency and justice in a level playground. This article argues that the rise of meritocracy in a society is the institutional consequence of adopting progressive humanism, an ideal-type worldview that advocates the harmonious co-realization of individual achievement and social contribution. However, meritocracy is a self-defeating illusion because, even in a level playground, it only rewards conspicuous and wasteful display of ‘merit’ rather than genuine contributions to society. Similar to (...) the promise of an afterlife to Catholicism, the illusion of meritocracy constitutes an indispensable theodicy to progressive humanism. This article presents a theodicy based on a revision of the popular concept of God’s benevolence. If we follow the Protestant tradition by assuming that God is the exclusive source of virtue, the benevolence of God has to be radically different from the benevolence of a human being. A benevolent and almighty God who wishes to reward virtue and punish evil would design the world order similar to that in the allegory of the long spoons. Divine punishment is unforgiving, merciless, (...) individually non-retributive, holistically retributive, and quantitatively unpredictable. All sufferings are divine punishment. Several popular arguments from evil, including animal suffering, victims of evil deeds, natural disasters, and children’s diseases, can be resolved within this framework. (shrink)

Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal-level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral analysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to (...) explaining variance in ethical behaviors than do values at the societal-level. Worldwide populations are aging with economic development as a result of public health initiatives and advances in therapeutic discoveries. Since 1850, life expectancy has advanced by 1 year for every four. Accompanying this change is the rapid development of anti‐aging science. There are three schools of thought in the field of aging science. One perspective is the life course approach, which considers that aging is a good and natural process to be embraced as a necessary and positive aspect of life, (...) where the aim is to improve the quality of existing lifespan and “compress” morbidity. Another view is that aging is undesirable, and that rejuvenation and indeed immortality are possible since the biological basis of aging is understood, and therefore, strategies are possible for engineering negligible senescence. Finally, a hybrid approach is that life span can be extended by anti‐aging medicines but with uncertain effects on health. While these advances offer much promise, the ethical perspectives are seldom discussed in cross‐disciplinary settings. When the benefits of surgery do not outweigh the harms or where they do not clearly do so, surgical interventions become morally contested. Cutting to the Core examines a number of such surgeries, including infant male circumcision and cutting the genitals of female children, the separation of conjoined twins, surgical sex assignment of intersex children and the surgical re-assignment of transsexuals, limb and face transplantation, cosmetic surgery, and placebo surgery.

The graph tong同and its associated concepts, such as da-tong (Great tong大同) and xuan-tong (mystic or dark tong玄同), have played important roles in the development of Chinese philosophy. Yet tong has received scant attention from either western or eastern scholarships. This paper is a first attempt to remedy such regret. Unlike usual understandings of tong as sameness or unity, this paper presents a nuanced account from early China, that is, ‘difference to one,’ a definition from the Mozi墨子. (...) This definition can be supported from etymological, textual, and lexical evidence. ‘Difference to one’ should not be solely attributed to a Mohist understanding; it in fact represents a common understanding of tong across philosophical streams in early China. This nuanced account provides new insights into the concept of tong in early philosophical texts, and furthermore breaks solid grounds for further studies of tong and its associated concepts. Đại dịch COVID-19 đã gây ra những diễn biến phức tạp, khó lường và tác động đến nhiều mặt của đời sống xã hội, lĩnh vực giáo dục cũng không nằm ngoài tác động đó. Học sinh được trải nghiệm học tập trực tuyến và có những khoảng thời gian “bất thường” rời xa trường lớp, bạn bè và tự học ở nhà (Hoang, 2020; Tran, 2020). Các hoạt động khoa học và giáo dục cũng chịu tác động không nhỏ (...) (Vuong, 2018). Đời sống vật chất lẫn tinh thần của đội ngũ giáo viên cả trong nước lẫn giáo viên nước ngoài đi dạy tại các quốc gia đều bị suy giảm (Vu et al., 2020). Đã có gần 42.000 giáo viên phải hoãn hợp đồng làm việc và không có lương, trong đó có 29.700 giáo viên mẫu giáo bỗng chốc trở nên thất nghiệp và phải làm các công việc thời vụ để đáp ứng đời sống thường nhật (Bich Thanh, 2020). Khoảng 70% các tổ chức giáo dục tư nhân có thể sẽ phá sản khi không thể lưu động đủ chi trả các loại hình tài chính khác nhau (Nguyen, 2020). Rất nhiều trường học đang lo lắng về tình trạng không mong muốn này bởi giáo viên sẽ không thể đảm bảo chất lượng công việc khi mà chất lượng cuộc sống của họ cũng đang bị đe dọa (Canrinus et al., 2012). Hơn nữa, hiệu suất làm việc giáo viên được cho là yếu tố tác động quan trọng và có ảnh hưởng nhiều nhất đến học sinh (Darling-Hammond and Youngs, 2002; Staiger and Rockoff, 2010), so với các tác động bên ngoài như lòng yêu nghề, cách diễn đạt, sự tương tác hay mối quan hệ giữa giáo viên và học sinh (Marsh and Bailey, 1991). Tong Shijun holds a concept of dialectics which can also be found in Mao’s writings and in classical Chinese philosophy. Tong, however, is ambivalent in his attitude to dialectics in this sense, and for this reason he recommends Chinese philosophy to focus more on formal logic. My point will be that with another concept of dialectics Tong can have dialectics without giving up on logic and epistemology. This argument is given substance by an analysis of texts by (...) The concept of tong played an important role in early Chinese political thought, as in the “Shangtong” chapter of the Mozi and the “Liyun” chapter of the Liji. Nevertheless, tong as a political thought has received little scholarly attention. In this article, I diverge from the common understandings of tong as sameness or unity and call on etymological and textual evidence to suggest that tong fundamentally refers to “difference to one.” In light of this understanding of (...) tong as “difference to one,” I focus on the “Shangtong” and the “Liyun” and compare the two visions of political tong that the two chapters present. With this research, I argue that the “Shangtong” and “Liyun” represent two different political streams as to how to unite a society with early China’s differences and divisions. (shrink)

This thesis is a qualitative research which includes three main objectives (1) To study the life of The Great King Zen Master Trần Nhân Tông, (2) To analyze the role and influence of The Great King Zen Master Trần Nhân Tông, (3) To propose the propagation process of Zen Buddhism in Vietnam by The Great King Zen Master Trần Nhân Tông. From the study, it found that firstly, the research offers a general knowledge about King Trần Nhân Tông’s life since (...) he was born and became a Crown Prince, then a King, and a monk and eventually an Enlightened King of Vietnam as well as a religious leader responsible for the founding of Trúc Lâm Zen Sect - Vietnamese Buddhism. Secondly, through better understanding of his life, readers and younger generations are supposed to obtain a more comprehensive view about the King’s outstanding deeds towards the country of Vietnam and a wider view on how the Buddha’s Teaching can apply not only in the monastic life or life in the forest, but also in the secular life, as long as real Dhamma is practiced. Last but not least, the King’s lifelong propagation of Buddha’s Teaching until his own demise is a testimony of what is considered as mainstream. Buddhism in Vietnam. In addition to his devotion to Zen practices as a way to propose “Engaged Buddhism”, the King demonstrated that Buddha’s Teaching can be widely applied in secular life. By his own practices, the Enlightened King showed that everything in daily life is Dhamma, which encourages and engages us to the practice to reflect our mind. Based upon the King’s teaching and proposal, Zen or “Thiền” has been discovered and continually propagated by Zen Master Thích Thanh Từ in the modern era, which results in the application and practice of younger generations in their respective life. By the Enlightened King’s teaching, ‘Buddha nature’, or ‘true mind’, has proven to be the most important tool to liberate the saṁsāra. Thus, we can witness how Zen Buddhism was and has been propagated in Vietnam and become an official Vietnamese Buddhism of the current age. (shrink)

Ngày 17/9/2024, Nhà xuất bản Elsevier đã công bố danh sách xếp hạng các nhà khoa học có ảnh hưởng nhất thế giới. Theo danh sách này, Việt Nam có 9 nhà khoa học được xếp hạng trong nhóm 10.000 nhà khoa học và tổng cộng 60 nhà khoa học được xếp hạng trong nhóm 100.000 nhà khoa học có trích dẫn ảnh hưởng thế giới trong năm 2024.

Huy động vốn qua công nghệ tài chính (Fintech) là hình thức huy động vốn rất phát triển tại nhiều quốc gia trên thế giới trong những năm gần đây, thể hiện được vai trò quan trọng đối với sự phát triển của các dự án khởi nghiệp và đổi mới sáng tạo. Bài viết phân tích tình trạng thất nghiệp của lao động di cư đến vùng Bắc Trung Bộ và Duyên hải miền Trung trong giai đoạn 2020-2022 với mục đích chính để làm việc. Nghiên cứu sử dụng dữ liệu từ Điều tra Lao động việc làm (ĐTLĐVL) của Tổng cục Thống kê các năm 2020 và 2022. Kết quả phân tích dữ liệu cho thấy: số lượng lao động di cư thất nghiệp đã giảm dần từ năm 2020 đến (...) 2022, tuy nhiên, vùng Bắc Trung Bộ và Duyên hải miền Trung vẫn phải đối mặt với nhiều thách thức. Nhóm lao động di cư thất nghiệp chủ yếu là nam giới trẻ tuổi, chưa kết hôn, có trình độ học vấn trung học phổ thông, sơ cấp, trung cấp và sống ở khu vực nông thôn. (shrink)

Bài viết sử dụng phương pháp hồi quy bình phương nhỏ nhất và phương pháp phương sai sai số thay đổi có điều kiện tự hồi quy nhằm mục đích xem xét tác động của nợ công đến tăng trưởng kinh tế khu vực châu Á trong giai đoạn 1998-2021. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy, Tỷ lệ nợ công, Mức độ tăng trưởng kinh tế tại thời điểm năm trước và Mức độ lạm phát sẽ có ảnh hưởng tiêu (...) cực đến Tăng trưởng kinh tế. Ngược lại, các biến Tăng trưởng chi tiêu chính phủ, Tỷ lệ tổng vốn cố định hình thành và Tăng trưởng xuất khẩu sẽ có ảnh hưởng tích cực đến Tăng trưởng kinh tế ở mức ý nghĩa cao. (shrink)

Ideology is always an issue that plays an important role in the life of a society, and that ideology also greatly influences the process of ruling the country of dynasties in the history. Unlike previous dynasties, which lasted only a few decades, the Ly dynasty represents a flourishing period of feudalism lasting more than 200 years. A major event was that King Ly Thanh Tong changed the country name from Dai Co Viet to Dai Viet in 1054, ushering in (...) a brilliant era in Vietnamese history. The ideology of “taking people as the root” of Vietnamese feudal dynasties highlights the unyielding and indomitable fighting spirit for the right to enjoy independence and freedom in the old land of Giao Chi and Cuu Chan, which later was Dai Viet and is now Vietnam. It also reflects the desire for people to live in peace and harmony. This articles focuses on studying the ideology of “taking people as the root” through the reign of kings of the Ly dynasty in Vietnam. From there, the article points out the achievements and limitations in the process of taking care of people, as well as historical lessons for the development of the country today. (shrink)

This article explores the implicit theories of morality, or the conceptions regarding the patterns of stability, continuity and change in moral dispositions, both in lay and academic discourses. The controversies surrounding these conceptions and the fragmentation of the models and perspectives in metaethics and moral psychology endangers the pursuit of adequate operationalizations of morally relevant constructs. The current debate between situationists, who deny that character is an useful concept for understanding human behavior, which is better explained by contextual factors (Doris (...) 1998; Harman 1998) and dispositionists, who advocate the cross-situational stability of traits, is also present in the lay discourse, through the existence of competing commonsense ontological assumptions regarding the mutability or alterability of moral features, namely the implicit theories perspective (Chiu, Dweck, Tong, & Fu 1997). These personal theories are primary suspects in the affective and cognitive reactions to transgressions: the type of attended information in formulating evaluative judgments, the calibration of moral responsibility and blameworthiness, the assignment of retribution or reparatory recommendations to transgressors. In the second part of the study we attempt to advance toward a more fine-grained inspection of these lay beliefs, arguing that the construct of implicit theories of morality, as it is currently treated and measured, tends to be restrictive and oversimplifying. This document is a set of notes I took on QFT as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, mainly inspired in lectures by Burt Ovrut, but also working through Peskin and Schroeder (1995), as well as David Tong’s lecture notes available online. They take a slow pedagogical approach to introducing classical field theory, Noether’s theorem, the principles of quantum mechanics, scattering theory, and culminating in the derivation of Feynman diagrams.

Bu makalenin amacı yerellik kavramının anlamını ve içeriğini tartışmaktır. Yerellik, ulus- laşmanın getirdiği bir refleks ve ulusal bilincin bütünleyici ruhu olarak arayış halinde sıklıkla anılmasına karşın, felsefe açısından değerlendirilmekten uzak kalmıştır. Bu sebep- ten ötürü yerellik kavramı, benzeri kavramlarla aynılaştırılarak ideolojik bir içeriğe bü- ründürülmekte, anlamı giderek belirsizleşmektedir. Söz konusu sorunun üstesinden gel- mek, yerelliğin neliğini ortaya çıkarabilmek için, yerelliğe felsefi bir bilinçle yaklaşılarak, kavramın içeriğinin, kavram haritasının ve ilkelerinin belirginleştirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu amaçla çalışmamızda ilkin yerellik arayışının modernleşmeyle birlikte sömürgecilik (...) ve Batılılaşma karşısında ulusçuluk, postmodernizm ve çoklu modernite görüşleri içeri- sinde nasıl tesis edilmeye çalışıldığı ve yetersizlikleri panoramik olarak sunulmuş, ardın- dan kavramın ne olmadığı üzerinde durulmuştur. Yerlicilik ve yerlilikten ayrı olarak ele alınması gerektiğine işaret edilen yerelliğin, insan, mekân ve tarihle ilişkisi irdelenerek, yerelleşmeye dikkat çekilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda yerelliğin üç temel ilkesi olduğu tespit edilmiştir: Yerellik bir insan-mekân sorunudur; salt bir yerellik bulunmamaktadır ve yerellik görecelidir; saf bir yerellik yerine yerellik, sentez ve yerelleşme süreci olarak anlaşılmalıdır. Söz konusu ilkelerden hareketle ve yerellik kavramının içeriğinin sorunla- rına karşı, yerellik yerine kültürel(lik) kavramının kullanılması önerilmiştir. The purpose of this article is to discuss the meaning and content of the concept of locality. Although locality is often referred to as a reflex of nationalization it has remained far from being evaluated in terms of philosophy. For this reason the concept of locality is equated with similar concepts and wrapped in an ideological content and its meaning becomes increasingly uncertain. In order to overcome the aforementioned problem and to reveal the nature of locality, and to clarify the content, concept map and principles of the concept it is necessary to approach locality with a philosophical consciousness. Firstly how the search for locality is tried to be established within the views of nationalism, postmoder- nism and multiple modernity against colonialism and Westernization with modernization and its inadequacies are presented panoramically, then it is emphasized what the concept is not. Localization, which is pointed out to be considered separately from localism and indigenousness, has been examined in terms of its relationship with people, space and history and attention has been drawn to localization. As a result of the research it has been determined that locality has three basic principles: Locality is a human-space problem; there is no mere locality and locality is relative; rather than a pure locality, locality should be understood as a process of synthesis and localization. Based on these principles and against the problems of the content of the concept of locality it is suggested to use the concept of cultural instead of locality. (shrink)

Các thông tin tóm lược ở đây được dẫn chiếu tới một số nhỏ các tài liệu tham khảo chính và không (...) thể đảm bảo tính trọn vẹn trong khuôn khổ một bài báo nhỏ. Những vấn đề đặt ra có tính tổng quát cho quan hệ môi sinh với việc khai khoáng, tách và tinh chế nickel nói chung trên thế giới. U izdanju Instituta za filozofiju i društvenu teoriju Univerziteta u Beogradu i Akademske knjige Novi Sad, biblioteka MINIMA je 2020. godine objavila knjigu naziva Od obrazovanja do neobrazovanja: tri teorije Vilhelma Fon Humbolta, Teodor V. Adorna i Konrada Paula Lismana. Teorije su preveli, priredili i uvodnu studiju napisali Igor Cvejić i Predrag Krstić, a recenzije su uradili Milica Sekulić, Olga Nikolić i Đurđa Trajković. Knjiga ima 150 stranica i sastavljena je od predgovora, tri prevoda, a na kraju knjige, pobrojana su (...) izdanja biblioteke MINIMA. Predgovor naslovljen Deklinacija obrazovanja: priča o sumraku jednog idola? nas uvodi u ove prije svega njemačke priče, te objašnjava težinu prevoda i nosioca ovih priča, riječi Bildung. Nature Index là CSDL khoa học được tổng hợp bởi riêng bởi Nature Research. Không giống như Web of Science hay Scopus, Nature Index hướng tới phân hạng đỉnh cao khi chỉ tính điểm các tác giả và cơ quan có công bố trên 82 tạp chí chất lượng cao được lựa chọn độc lập. Rừng là một phần cực kỳ quan trọng của hệ sinh thái Trái đất và con người. Rừng chiếm 75% tổng sản lượng sơ cấp của sinh quyển Trái đất và chứa 80% sinh khối thực vật của Trái đất. Sản lượng sơ cấp ròng rừng cung cấp ước tính là 21,9 gigaton (GT) sinh khối mỗi năm đối với rừng nhiệt đới, 8,1 GT đối với rừng ôn đới và 2,6 GT đối với rừng phương Bắc (1). Đất và (...) rừng luôn có mối liên hệ nội tại. Trong hàng triệu năm, đất đã cung cấp nền tảng cần thiết cho toàn bộ hệ sinh thái rừng phát triển. Ở chiều ngược lại, rừng giúp đảm bảo sự màu mỡ của đất cho thực vật tiếp tục sinh trưởng và phát triển, tạo điều kiện cho sản xuất nông nghiệp. (shrink)
